The Southern District of Illinois has five U.S. District Judges (one of whom is a senior Judge) and three Magistrate Judges. Geographically, the district covers thirty-nine counties from the Kentucky border on the south to Metro East counties bordering Southern Illinois on the West. There are two divisional offices located in East St. Louis and Benton.
Kenneth Gray U.S. Courthouse, Benton, Illinois
The Cornerstone Laying Ceremony for the Federal Building to house a post office and courthouse was held on October 23, 1958. Keynote speaker was Congressman Kenneth J. Gray, 25th District, Illinois.
The Benton Federal Building and courthouse was most recently renovated in December of 1992. Updates included the addition of bankruptcy courtrooms and renovation of the U.S. Marshal's offices.
Melvin Price U.S. Courthouse, East St. Louis, Illinois
On October 25, 1909, President William H. Taft dedicated the original structure as a courthouse, post office, and revenue office in East St. Louis, Illinois.
On October 26, 1990, a dedication ceremony and open house was held for the historic, and newly renovated, Melvin Price Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, at 750 Missouri Avenue, East St. Louis, Illinois.
